ARIF Latif gave Malaysia the winning point as the hosts beat China 3-0 to lift the Asian Junior Championships mixed team title at the Juara Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

The younger brother of national shuttler Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Arif immediately dedicated the gold medal to his father who celebrated his 52nd birthday last week.

More importantly, for Malaysia, the gold medal atoned for their defeat to South Korea in the final of last year’s championships.

Arif beat Chen Long 21-19, 22-20 to give Malaysia the winning point, thanks largely to the superb efforts of the mixed doubles pair of Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei and girls’ singles player Lydia Cheah.

Lydia beat Liu Jie, also in straight games, 21-18, 21-17 with Wee Kiong-Khe Wei giving the hosts the perfect start with a 21-15, 21-8 win over Li Tian-Wang Xiaoli.

The title was only the second one for Malaysia in the team event after their triumph in 2001 when they beat Chinese Taipei 3-0 to take the title.

Arif said he was motivated by his teammates’ performance and was all fired up to take on Chen Long.

Incidentally, Arif had lost to Chen Long on two occasions during the Youth Olympics in Melbourne last January.

MALAYSIA qualified for four of the five finals, but in the end, it was China who walked away with three gold medals on the final day of the Asian Junior Championships at the Juara Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

China took gold in the boys’ singles, boys’ doubles and girls’ singles while Indonesia and Malaysia took a title each via the girls’ doubles and mixed doubles respectively.

Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei, the top seeds, were stretched by South Korea’s Shin Baek Cheol-Yoo Hyun Young to three games before prevailing to win in 21-18, 18-21, 21-12 to give the local fans plenty to cheer. In fact, it was Malaysia’s first ever gold medal in the mixed doubles in the Championships.

However, there was heartache for the Malaysians when Arif Latif allowed China’s Chen Long to snatch victory despite taking a 10-0 lead in the final game of his match against the Chinese No 1. In fact, Arif even held match point at 21-19 but Chen Long fought back courageously to win 18-21, 21-18, 22-20.

In the boys’ doubles, Wee Kiong’s hopes of a double evaporated when he and his partner, Lutfi Zaim were beaten in straight games, 21-12, 21-18, by China’s Chai Biao-Li Tian in the final.

And in the girls’ doubles, Malaysia’s Lydia Chea-Tee Jing Yee were beaten 21-12, 15-21, 21-18 by Indonesia’s Puspita Richi Dili-Debby Susanto.

However, for Wee Kiong, his next target is the World Junior Championships in Auckland, New Zealand on Oct 25-Nov 4.

“We have matured in our game following the exposure we got in the Sudirman Cup and other international matches,” said Wee Kiong.

“And we hope to improve further when we compete in the World Juniors.”

In the girls’ singles, China’s Liu Xin dashed Singapore’s hopes of a title when she downed Gu Juan 21-7, 15-21, 21-16 in the final.
