Wang Ling and Peter Gade were the winners of the Denmark Open on Sunday, beating their (former) compatriots to clinch a first Super Series title for a long time. For Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty and Joachim Fischer-Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen, it was a first.
Wang Lin had won at home a tournament, – the China Masters – but it was not part of the Super Series tour as the series only started last year. But this victory in China was her last one, in March 2006 before she scooped Gold on Sunday, in Odense, facing the in form Zhou Mi, who had to postpone her flight to Paris with her coach because she hadn’t banked on making it to the final.
And the China-born Hong Kong representative played below par in her final against her former compatriot, Wang, who had enjoyed a first round walkover from Xie Xingfang.
The Chinese led most of the time in the first game, except when Zhou was ahead 15/13, and it was logically her who clinched the opening game 21/18. The second one was quite one sided, with a clear difference of efficiency in the net play, dominated this time by Wang.
After finishing second in the China Masters and more recently in the Badminton Asia Championships, Wang Lin finally ended her 2 ½ years title drought to become the new Chinese little mermaid. “I really didn’t think it would be that easy” admitted Wang, all smiles.
Another brilliant shuttler had been waiting for a while to stand on the highest step of the podium : Peter Gade, once thought by some finished for high level competition, proved this week that he was still one of the best players in the world by scooping a title he had last won in 2000, some eight years ago.
His opponent of the day, however, Joachim Persson, was certainly not keen on letting Gade get away with an easy victory, even if he had never beaten him in International competition ever before.
Persson was clearly the underdog, but for the first two games, it didn’t show, as the two compatriots shared the two games, the first one going to Gade 21/18 and the second to Persson 17/21.
Winning a game from his former role model was probably a boost for Persson as he had rarely been even with Gade, yet the experience prevailed in the decider, where Gade was totally in control, using a wide variety of shots.
The former European Champion was always in the lead and by a quite comfortable margin, which left no doubt for the public that he would be ending as the winner. And he clinched the title with a 21/14 win.
“With all the injuries I have had during this year, I am very pleased with my results here in Odense. I am very satisfied with my game during the whole tournament,”, said Gade.
“Of course Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei are not here, but I had a tough draw. Today I was the favourite. It was a tough match for me because Joachim played well. I am really happy to win this title again,” he added on his website www.petergade.net
Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty can celebrate as they scooped their first ever title – not even a satellite tournament came under their belts during their 6 years partnership, and their first title is a Super Series – a great reward for the two friends, who leave in the shadow of higher profile shuttlers such as Lee Chong Wei or men’s doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.
Yet this time, they are under the limelight and will forget about all these 76 tournaments played together without a single Gold. Their 77th event as a pair – since their 2002 debuts in the Uber Cup qualifiers – will definitely be marked by a white stone. The Malaysians, on Sunday, took care of Indonesia’s Rani Mundiasti and Jo Novita, 23/21 – 21/12.
Indonesia however – who were well supported by a local community – could still celebrate as their heroes, Olympic Champions Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan had won Gold in the men’s doubles, thanks to some impressive play. The duo beat unseeded Fu Haifeng and Shen Ye.
And in straight games and just over half an hour of play, it was all finished, with a close but efficient 21/18 – 21/19 victory.
Last but not least – it was actually the first match of the day, Denmark’s Fischer Nielsen and Pedersen surprised their compatriots Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter-Juhl and won the all Danish affair in the mixed doubles. The odd part was the score line (21/17 – 21/14) which clearly showed Laybourn and Juhl were not in their best shape, but for their opponents, this title will taste very sweet after a victory in the Dutch Open.

19th October 2008
The 60th Yonex Dutch Open was held from 14 till 19 October 2008 at the (new) Topsport Centre in Almere (near Amsterdam). It is for the second time that the event was held in this splendid accommodation. The Yonex Dutch Open is, according to the rules of the Badminton World Federation, a Grand Prix event.
Fran Kurniawan and Rendra Wijaya won the men’s doubles of the Yonex Dutch Open. The first seed young Indonesian beat Indian unseeded Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas (21-18, 21-18). The Indonesians (both 23 years old) dominated the match. They were constantly in the lead a few points. Every time the Indians closed the gap, they gained a few next points. Kumar (29) and Thomas (28) did what they could but it was not enough. The Indonesians (23 on the world ranking) took over the title in men’s doubles from their fellow countrymen Sukmawan/Dasuki.
Lena Frier Kristensen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl won the womens doubles of the Yonex Dutch Open. The Danish European champions (1) beated in the final scond seeded Shendy Irawati/Meiliana Jauhari (Ina). After a simple straight win in the first (21-16; the Danes were never behind in the score) they also played a good second game. At 20-16 Frier/Juhl had four matchpoints in a row but the Indonesians wiped them all out. Then the Indonesian spoiled three gamepoints. The fifth matchpoint was thé one for the Danes (25-23).
In a spectacular mens singles final Andre K. Tedjono (Ina, 3) was the best at the end. But his opponent Chetan Anand (Ind, 6) certainly derserved credits too. Games scores of 21-15, 11-21, 21-19 the story is told. The last few minutes of the match were very exciting and Anand made it a real match. The spectators cheered with every smash and at 20-19 the third smash was the winning for Tedjono. He fell on the floor of joy and took the Indonesian flag to the ceremony. Anand, who played his fourt final in the last four tournaments, had to be happy with de runner up position. But both players deserved the ovation of the audience.
Yao Jie could raise her hands at the end. She just won her second Dutch Open title. Before that she did in in 2003. Her match against Linda Zechiri was more difficult than expected. Although the figures were clear (21-14, 21-13), the match was not. “I am so happy”, Jie laughed afterwards. “It was a tough match. She already had beaten Judith Meulendijks in the quarters and then you can play badminton. I never played her before but I was prepared.” Linda Zechiri was not happy at all. Altough she realised she played an extaordinary good tournament. “That feeling comes later”, she said. “I was just too tired today after my matches in the quarters and semi final.”
The match never was a real match in mixed doubles. The Danes Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen were simply too strong for Fran Kurniawan and Shendy Irawati (3) of Indonesia. Therefore the unseeded Danes won their first Grand Prix title together. The first game looked like a real match in the score, but it wasn’t a real match Fischer brought his experience and Pedersen her fighting strenght and they kept in control all the game (21-17). Their strenght paid out in the second. Fischer (29) and Pedersen (22) rushed over the young Indonesians (Kurniawan is 23 and Irawati 21) and finished at 21-9.
